In April 2013, a Personal Independence Payment or PIP was introduced to replace the Disability Living Allowance (DLA) as a state benefit. Although the DLA payment type has remained set up since that time for many recipients, it is gradually being phased out. Any new disability claim being set up since that date will now fall under PIP and not DLA. PIP Support

If you would like to apply for a Personal Independence Payment, you will need to call the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). You can reach this department by dialing the PIP number that is listed here. PIP claim lines are available from 8am to 6pm Monday through Friday. Dedicated PIP advisors are there to take your calls and speak to you on a one-to-one basis about your specific situation. Eligibility for PIP

Most people between the ages of 16-64 are available to receive PIP, so long as certain other qualifications are met. They have to have a long term disability or health condition that causes them to struggle with activities that relate to daily living. Mobility is included in these categories. To make a claim, you need to have been a resident of Great Britain for at least 2 of the last 3 years. PIP can be received whether or not a person is working.

In order to be considered for a Personal Independence Payment, your disability or illness will have had to cause you problems for the last three months and are expected to last for at least nine months, unless you are terminally ill. PIP payments may be designated to people that need help with activities such as eating and preparing food, general hygiene practices such as bathing and using the toilet and those with issues when dressing and undressing.

Other areas that are taken into consideration include communication and reading problems, difficulties in managing treatments and medicines as well as being unable to make financial decisions or engage with others on a regular basis. Applying for PIP

When first applying for PIP, you will have to undergo an assessment to determine your ability to make a claim. The assessment will be performed by a professional from the healthcare industry that will assist the Department for Work and Pensions in providing the recipient with the correct amount of help that is needed. If an office consultation is recommended or a face-to-face meeting is required then you will receive a letter stating why this visit is necessary. The letter will also include the time and place for the initial assessment. If you cannot attend, call the PIP helpline.

The DWP will use the health visit along with your application and all other evidence in determining your eligibility for PIP. A decision regarding your claim will be provided to you within three weeks of reviewing all the information that is needed for your specific case including the healthcare consultation. Once you receive PIP, your rate is regularly assessed to continuously ensure that you are getting the right amount of support.

PIP Payments

PIP is usually paid every four weeks. These payments are free from tax and you can receive them regardless of employment. There are two areas that compose the Personal Independent Payment, daily living and mobility. In cases involving a terminal illness, recipients will receive the enhanced daily living component if they are not expected to live any longer than 6 months. The rate of mobility depends on the needs of the specific case. As with all other benefits and pensions, PIP will be paid directly into a bank or building society account. You will need to call the PIP telephone number if:

  • You have a change in personal details such as a change in doctor or address.
  • You have to alter the amount of help that is needed or there is a change to your existing condition.
  • You have to go into a hospital or care home for more than three weeks.
  • You are planning on going abroad for more than 13 weeks.
  • The recipient is put into prison or begins receiving an employment disability allowance.

Appeals

If you remain unhappy with the decision of your claim there are steps that you must take in order to resolve this issue. You must call the Personal Independence Payment contact number to discuss the decision. Next, you are to make a formal request to have the decision looked at again. You may appeal the decision upon still being unhappy with it.  DWP will also attempt to contact you once you have received a letter explaining why you are not eligible. Upon contact from them, explain why you don’t agree with their decision and provide information to support your argument.
